God’s Greatness and Evidence for His Unity

Al-Mu’minūn (The Believers)

وَهُوَ الَّذِي ذَرَأَكُمْ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَإِلَيْهِ تُحْشَرُونَ {٧٩}

And it is He Who spread you on earth, and to Him you will all be gathered.

وَهُوَ الَّذِي يُحْيِي وَيُمِيتُ وَلَهُ اخْتِلَافُ اللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ {٨٠}

It is He Who gives life and causes death, and to Him belongs the alternation of night and day. Do you not understand?

بَلْ قَالُوا مِثْلَ مَا قَالَ الْأَوَّلُونَ {٨١}

But they say the like of what the earlier peoples said.

قَالُوا أَئِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَامًا أَئِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ {٨٢}

They say, “Is it that when we die and become dust and bones, will we really be resurrected?

لَقَدْ وُعِدْنَا نَحْنُ وَآَبَاؤُنَا هَذَا مِنْ قَبْلُ إِنْ هَذَا إِلَّا أَسَاطِيرُ الْأَوَّلِينَ {٨٣}

This is what we and our forefathers were promised before; this is nothing but ancient fables.”

قُلْ لِمَنِ الْأَرْضُ وَمَنْ فِيهَا إِنْ كُنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ {٨٤}

Say, “To whom belong the earth and all those who are on it, if you really know?”

سَيَقُولُونَ لِلَّهِ قُلْ أَفَلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ {٨٥}

They will say, “To Allah.” Say, “Will you not then take heed?”

قُلْ مَنْ رَبُّ السَّمَاوَاتِ السَّبْعِ وَرَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ {٨٦}

Say, “Who is the Lord of the seven heavens and the Lord of the Mighty Throne?”

سَيَقُولُونَ لِلَّهِ قُلْ أَفَلَا تَتَّقُونَ {٨٧}

They will say, “Allah.” Say, “Will you not then fear Him?”

قُلْ مَنْ بِيَدِهِ مَلَكُوتُ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ وَهُوَ يُجِيرُ وَلَا يُجَارُ عَلَيْهِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ {٨٨}

Say, “In Whose Hand is the dominion of all things – and He gives protection while none can protect against Him – if you really know?”

سَيَقُولُونَ لِلَّهِ قُلْ فَأَنَّى تُسْحَرُونَ {٨٩}

They will say, “Allah.” Say, “Then how can you be deluded?”

بَلْ أَتَيْنَاهُمْ بِالْحَقِّ وَإِنَّهُمْ لَكَاذِبُونَ {٩٠}

In fact, We brought them the truth, but they are certainly liars.

مَا اتَّخَذَ اللَّهُ مِنْ وَلَدٍ وَمَا كَانَ مَعَهُ مِنْ إِلَهٍ إِذًا لَذَهَبَ كُلُّ إِلَهٍ بِمَا خَلَقَ وَلَعَلَا بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَى بَعْضٍ سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ عَمَّا يَصِفُونَ {٩١}

Allah has never begotten a son, nor is there any god besides Him. Otherwise, each god would have taken away what he had created, and each would have tried to gain supremacy over the other. Glory be to Allah far above what they ascribe to Him!

عَالِمِ الْغَيْبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ فَتَعَالَى عَمَّا يُشْرِكُونَ {٩٢}

Knower of the unseen and the seen. Exalted is He far above what they associate with Him!

قُلْ رَبِّ إِمَّا تُرِيَنِّي مَا يُوعَدُونَ {٩٣}

Say, “My Lord, if You show me what they are warned of,

رَبِّ فَلَا تَجْعَلْنِي فِي الْقَوْمِ الظَّالِمِينَ {٩٤}

my Lord, then do not include me among the wrongdoing people.”

وَإِنَّا عَلَى أَنْ نُرِيَكَ مَا نَعِدُهُمْ لَقَادِرُونَ {٩٥}

We are surely able to show you that of which We have warned them.

ادْفَعْ بِالَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ السَّيِّئَةَ نَحْنُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا يَصِفُونَ {٩٦}

Repel evil with what is best; We know well what they claim.

وَقُلْ رَبِّ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ هَمَزَاتِ الشَّيَاطِينِ {٩٧}

And say, “My Lord, I seek refuge with You from the temptations of the devils.

وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ رَبِّ أَنْ يَحْضُرُونِ {٩٨}

And I seek refuge with You, my Lord, that they even come near me.”

حَتَّى إِذَا جَاءَ أَحَدَهُمُ الْمَوْتُ قَالَ رَبِّ ارْجِعُونِ {٩٩}

And I seek refuge with You, my Lord, that they even come near me.”

لَعَلِّي أَعْمَلُ صَالِحًا فِيمَا تَرَكْتُ كَلَّا إِنَّهَا كَلِمَةٌ هُوَ قَائِلُهَا وَمِنْ وَرَائِهِمْ بَرْزَخٌ إِلَى يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ {١٠٠}

so that I may do righteous deeds in what I left behind.” No, it is only a word he utters. And behind them is a barrier until the Day they are resurrected.

فَإِذَا نُفِخَ فِي الصُّورِ فَلَا أَنْسَابَ بَيْنَهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ وَلَا يَتَسَاءَلُونَ {١٠١}

When the Trumpet is blown, there will be no kinship ties between them on that Day, nor will they ask about one another.

فَمَنْ ثَقُلَتْ مَوَازِينُهُ فَأُولَئِكَ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ {١٠٢}

So those whose scales [of good deeds] are heavy, it is they who will be successful.

وَمَنْ خَفَّتْ مَوَازِينُهُ فَأُولَئِكَ الَّذِينَ خَسِرُوا أَنْفُسَهُمْ فِي جَهَنَّمَ خَالِدُونَ {١٠٣}

But those whose scales are light, they are the ones who have lost their souls, abiding in Hell forever.

تَلْفَحُ وُجُوهَهُمُ النَّارُ وَهُمْ فِيهَا كَالِحُونَ {١٠٤}

The Fire will scorch their faces, leaving them disfigured.

أَلَمْ تَكُنْ آَيَاتِي تُتْلَى عَلَيْكُمْ فَكُنْتُمْ بِهَا تُكَذِّبُونَ {١٠٥}

“Were not My verses recited to you, and you used to reject them?”

قَالُوا رَبَّنَا غَلَبَتْ عَلَيْنَا شِقْوَتُنَا وَكُنَّا قَوْمًا ضَالِّينَ {١٠٦}

They will say, “Our Lord, our misfortune overwhelmed us, and we were a people who went astray.

رَبَّنَا أَخْرِجْنَا مِنْهَا فَإِنْ عُدْنَا فَإِنَّا ظَالِمُونَ {١٠٧}

Our Lord, take us out of this; if we returned [to evil], we would certainly be wrongdoers.”

قَالَ اخْسَئُوا فِيهَا وَلَا تُكَلِّمُونِ {١٠٨}

Allah will say, “Stay therein despised, and do not speak to Me.

إِنَّهُ كَانَ فَرِيقٌ مِنْ عِبَادِي يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا آَمَنَّا فَاغْفِرْ لَنَا وَارْحَمْنَا وَأَنْتَ خَيْرُ الرَّاحِمِينَ {١٠٩}

There was a group of My slaves who used to pray, ‘Our Lord, we believe, so forgive us and have mercy upon us, and You are the Most Merciful of those who show mercy.’

فَاتَّخَذْتُمُوهُمْ سِخْرِيًّا حَتَّى أَنْسَوْكُمْ ذِكْرِي وَكُنْتُمْ مِنْهُمْ تَضْحَكُونَ {١١٠}

But you took them in mockery until they made you forget My remembrance, and you used to laugh at them.

إِنِّي جَزَيْتُهُمُ الْيَوْمَ بِمَا صَبَرُوا أَنَّهُمْ هُمُ الْفَائِزُونَ {١١١}

I have rewarded them Today for their patience; it is they who are the successful.”

قَالَ كَمْ لَبِثْتُمْ فِي الْأَرْضِ عَدَدَ سِنِينَ {١١٢}

He will say, “How many years did you stay on earth?”

قَالُوا لَبِثْنَا يَوْمًا أَوْ بَعْضَ يَوْمٍ فَاسْأَلِ الْعَادِّينَ {١١٣}

They will say, “We stayed for a day or part of a day; ask those who keep count.”

قَالَ إِنْ لَبِثْتُمْ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا لَوْ أَنَّكُمْ كُنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ {١١٤}

Allah will say, “You only stayed for a while, if only you had known.

أَفَحَسِبْتُمْ أَنَّمَا خَلَقْنَاكُمْ عَبَثًا وَأَنَّكُمْ إِلَيْنَا لَا تُرْجَعُونَ {١١٥}

Did you think that We created you with no purpose, and that you would not be brought back to Us?”

فَتَعَالَى اللَّهُ الْمَلِكُ الْحَقُّ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْكَرِيمِ {١١٦}

Exalted is Allah, the True Sovereign! None has the right to be worshiped except Him, the Lord of the Honorable Throne.

وَمَنْ يَدْعُ مَعَ اللَّهِ إِلَهًا آَخَرَ لَا بُرْهَانَ لَهُ بِهِ فَإِنَّمَا حِسَابُهُ عِنْدَ رَبِّهِ إِنَّهُ لَا يُفْلِحُ الْكَافِرُونَ {١١٧}

Whoever invokes another god besides Allah, for which he has no proof, his reckoning will be with his Lord. Indeed, the disbelievers will never succeed.

وَقُلْ رَبِّ اغْفِرْ وَارْحَمْ وَأَنْتَ خَيْرُ الرَّاحِمِينَ {١١٨}

Say, “My Lord, forgive and have mercy, and you are the Best of those who show mercy.”
